The Elements to Succeed In Petrochemicals
The existing oil refinery in SOHAR is operated by Orpic (Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company) and produces 116,000 barrels per day. It is currently undergoing a US$1.5 billion expansion, under the Sohar Refinery Improvement Project, which will result in the production of an additional 60,000 barrels per day. As well as increased capacity, the quality of its chemical by-products will be greatly improved. Orpic also operates a refinery in Muscat, connected by a new 266 km pipeline that delivers chemical feedstock to SOHAR.

Other than fuel products, the refinery in SOHAR also produces significant volumes of naphtha and propylene, which serve as feedstock for an adjoining aromatics and polypropylene plant. Between the refinery, aromatics plant, and polypropylene plant, downstream synergies exist in plastics and other sectors.
